Great children’s photographers will make the entire experience fun for the children and as relaxing as possible for mom and dad. Pulling a child to the photo studio and making him sit quiet while some outsider clicks a camera in his face is not going to give the results you want. Photographers, who are practiced working with young ones, know that they hold a hunch on how to read grown-ups. They can tell immediately if the adult genuinely likes kids or is just bearing them. If they sense the latter, you may have now found the reason why your generally obedient child acts like a brute at the photographers.
If you wish to be an effective children’s photographer you have to let the kids play. You have to try to talk to them on their level without being patronizing. You also need to understand children. It is astonishing how many camera experts will expect a kid to sit silent for what looks like hours while they take on this pose or that. This is just ridiculous. When you act with kids you should work fast. In fact you only have a couple of minutes, at times even below that, to get the photograph right. This doesn't allow for amateur faults. Kids get bored really fast and their behavior will start to worsen.
In addition to working prompt, you need to provide them a time out as soon as you observe they are getting bored. Hopefully then you will be able to re-engage their interest and take more shots. Before you even begin taking photographs of the kid, the professional should have agreed with the parents the nature of shots they need and how many. Having a solid plan in mind and knowing precisely what you want to happen will help to cut short any issues. Also the better your children’s photographer speak to you, i.e. the client the more likely you are to realize a happy outcome.
